DARK LIGHTS: félin amour
11.09.’15 // 7 p.m. – 1 a.m.
@ eXAF (Plovdiv, 89 Ruski bld.)

DARK LIGHTS: félin amour is intended in considering the cat (or the catlike) as a characteristic in human identity. It also provides visual evidence on the attitude-towards-cats existing as a syndrome.
Targeted are the inherent feline worldview, cat’s sensitivity and super-sensitivity, cat sight – all of them seen as human experience and approach to others or our inner-selves. The cat as a whole! (fully, thoroughly, and on its components too)
The exhibition will present video works, net art, paintings, illustration, posters, cards, stickers, stencils – from Bulgarian and foreign artists, which are going to be exposed within the eXAF exhibition space, modified through a light installation, as well as outside in public space.
While entering the Night, audio-visual set by YvesO is going to slowly transform the exhibition area to a music-dominated party zone.

Visual identity: So Many Stories To Tell

CHUDOGLED – an exhibition by Ina Valentinova & Valko Chobanov
Opening: 14 August, 18:30

The exhibition follows the close meeting of each of the two artists with the phantasms of her/his private psycho-reality. Intuitively borrowing from the rich world of their subconsciousness, both artists create visual narratives, based on the freedom of their imagination. Concentrating on sensitivity, based above the ordinary, the gained experience is transformed to sample and gentle saws of the selves. Into this open interpretation of the inner wanderings the viewer from outer space is let only through the terms of game-playing – the state when concreteness of the seen is deluded, reflections are fertilized and thus the fragility of the expression is protected.

The media through which this exhibition project communicates are painting, drawing, lithography, etching, aquatint and video. The works presented in the exhibition are created separately by the two artists during the last one year, and in addition – in relation to the exhibition space and in mutual collaboration – they have made a joint work which gives the final touch of the exhibition.

The event is a part of eXAF’s year-round exhibition program, supported by the Gaudenz B. Ruf Award for Contemporary Bulgarian Art.

The working hours of the gallery are by appointment through some of the communication channels, stated here: http://exaf.org/en/contacts

16.04 – 29.04 – “GameOver” – A Site-specific Project by Venera Smilenova & Maria Malinova

Opening: 16.04 / 19:00 @ eXAF Gallery Space

The project:
Represents a vision for the computer world that we’re living in. It is about nowadays addiction to video games and how the mind is changed. It is focused on video games that are released in 1984. I chose that particular year to make connection with Orwell’s novel “Nineteen Eighty-Four” and it’s conception – public manipulation through a “telescreen” and a “newspeak”. That occurs when the mind of the player is occupied by the video game. The “telescreen” is a computer and a “newspeak” represented by a specific slang is often used by many players. Game Over is a message in video games which signals that the game has ended, commonly due to a negative outcome. Finally the game “says” to your mind “GameOver”.

The project consists of a couple of video art pieces, gifs, one site-specific installation and graphics which are a mix between classical printmaking and digital print.

Short presentation of the games:
“Karateka” is a 1984 video game. It was originally programmed for the Apple II. The game is a USA production but represents the Japanese culture.
“Hogan’s Alley” is the opposite – 1984 video game by Nintendo – a Japan production but represents the American culture.
“Tetris” is a Soviet tile-matching puzzle video game. It is also the first entertainment software to be exported from the USSR to the US. The Amiga platform has static background graphics which represent the USSR aesthetics.

Venera Smilenova works in the visual arts field. She puts herself and the others in various environments and often with hir work is doing research on human behavior and norms. Through her projects, she is trying to provoke the senses – to stimulate the nervous system of the viewer and it engage indirectly, and sometimes directly.

Maria Malinova works in the fields of sculpture and installation.

Presentation of “Pillars of Creation” – the First Album of Trifon Tashev

On 27.03 @ 19:00 at eXAF Gallery Space was presented the first album of Trifon Tashev a.k.a. Torazame Tasuu – “Pillars of Creation”.

12 compositions, inspired by real experiences, emotional states, feelings expressed by abstract methods of music. The creations are more like places in Trifon’s mind, than songs made for entertainment.

The artist Magdalena Gincheva naturally complements the audio portion with synchronized visions to each of the compositions – converted moments, consequences from the impact of effects from the multilayered work.
